The TDI 4.2 has a stroke-to-bore ratio of 1:15 meaning the stroke is 15% longer than the bore is wide. In comparison the 370hp V8 Yanmar 8LV-370 has a stroke-to-bore ratio of 1:11. The downside of a long stroke is greater piston speed resulting in increased friction. However this problem only comes into force at engine speeds well above 5
The 4.0 has a rather sophisticated version and hopefully this new Audi system will keep too many carbon deposits from forming. Our 4.0's have large oil droplet accumulation and small oil droplet accumulation mechanisms. The old 4.2L V8, in the RS4 e.g., was notorious for carbon deposits as early as 10,000 miles! Ack!

Car started misfiring while I was driving, turned it off when I stopped, and she did not turn back on. I was able to push start it and drive it the half mile back home. Checked codes and got a cylinder 4 misfire as i expected.

i believe the extra power came from a different intake manifold, tuning and free exhaust flow similar differences between the S6 V8 (340hp) and the A6 4.2 V8. You're pretty much limited to the hp increases in the 4.2 as there isn't much support for it. You can squeeze an extra 20 hp from a chip and an exhaust, just don't expect miracles.
I've owned mine for 3 + years now, bought it when it had 50k miles on the clock and it now sits at 120k miles. Mine's a 09 6mt. I had no idea about the reliability issues coming in, but I must say I've been pleasantly surprised with how reliable she's been, and I daily drive it too.
